Creating a College Application List

Naviata provides a simple step-by-step method to help you create an initial college application list. That list can then be prioritized to your needs and wants using our Comparion Model.

Let us first get started with creating your initial college application list:

Step 1: Determining the Right College Fit for You

Start with Determining the Right College Fit and go through other resources in the sidebar.

Step 2: Understanding How to Create a College List

Watch this video tutorial to understand how to create a college list

Step 3: Understanding College Navigator Features

College Navigator provides search features based on the following criteria
  • Name of School
  • States (Use map for more than 1 state)
  • Miles from a ZIP Code
  • Programs/Majors/Browsing for Programs
  • Level of Award
  • Institution Type
  • Tuition & Fees
  • Undergraduate Student Enrollment
  • Housing
  • Campus Setting
  • % of Applicants Admitted
  • Test Scores
  • Varsity Athletic Team
  • Extended Learning Opportunities
  • Religious Affiliation, and
  • Specialized Mission

Step 4: Selectinging a College

  • You may start with one or several criteria depending on your needs: For example, a single criterion could be the name of the school such as Stanford University or simply Stanford. If you enter that name in Name of School field and click on the Show Results button at the bottom, Stanford University name would pop-up on the display panel on the right. You may click on that to know more about the college. This provides a wealth of information about the school.
  • Use several criteria as it provides shorter list and better match to your individual needs and wants.

Step 5: Adding to Favorites

If the school meets your needs and wants, click on Add to Favorites button on the right side of the panel. and it will be listed on My Favorites folder.

Step 6: Adding More Colleges

You may add more colleges using any of the following methods:

  • You may continue adding more colleges individually until you have a list of, say, 7 colleges that meet your criteria.
  • Or you may use multiple criteria such as 2-year colleges and within 20 miles of a ZIP code. You may use as many criteria as applicable in your individual context.
  • Alternatively, you may start with one criteria and use the Guide Me button at the bottom of the page and enter the next criterion. Continue until you have entered all the criteria applicable in your search. It's OK to skip certain criteria not important in you search. A step-by-step command will prompt you to continue to the next step. You may stop and click on Show Results button anytime you have entered all the criteria applicable in your search.
  • All your Add to Favorites are automatically listed on to My Favorites list. Any time you may click on My Favorites button at the top of the page to view the list.
  • If you plan to study in a particular state or your home state (more than 80% of the students attending 4-year colleges in the US do), then one easy way to add colleges quickly is to choose a particular state and 4-year/2-year check box in the Institution Type option, and then click on Show Results. It would result in all the colleges in that state displayed on the right-hand panel. You can then choose the colleges one at a time from that list. Just click on the Add to Favorites button for the colleges you plan to add and your selections would be listed to My Favorites list.
  • Whichever of the above methods you choose to add more colleges, very quickly you will be able to create your college application list.

Step 7: Comparing and Finalizing

  • Use Compare feature in My Favorites list for a comparative review of the colleges in your list.
  • Delete any college in the list that do not meet your needs. In that case go back and add colleges if necessary.

Step 8: Exporting Results

  • Once you have finalized a list of, say, 7 colleges, click on the Export Results button at the top of the page. You need to export the list in Excel format.
  • You may also use the Save button to email the list to your parents, siblings, guidance counselor, and friends.
